To those new in the entertainment industry, the terms “casting agency” and “modeling agency” are often thought to be the same, but they are two very different types of agencies with distinct roles and functions.

Whether you’re an actor or a model, knowing the specific functions and focus of each will guide you in making informed decisions and finding the right path to success. Below, I describe some key differences between a casting agency and a modeling agency and their roles in your career.

1. Talent Focus & Industry Type: Casting agencies focus primarily on actors and finding the right talent for specific roles in film, television, theater, commercials, and other media projects. Modeling agencies focus mainly on representing models and finding them work in the fashion industry, such as fashion shows, print ads, TV commercials, and other promotional activities.

2. Services Offered: Casting agencies work on the production side of things and are involved in the audition process and role selection; sourcing, auditioning, and selecting actors that best fit each role. They do not typically represent their own talent but rather work with local talent agencies to find the best options.

Modeling agencies represent a roster of models and talent and work to secure them modeling jobs by acting as the liaison between the client/casting agency and the model. They handle negotiations and contracts on behalf of their models and assist models with building and refining their portfolios. 

3. Client Connections: Casting agents often have strong ties with professionals in the entertainment industry such as production companies and directors. Modeling agencies have connections with designers/fashion houses, advertising agencies, photographers, and visual media brands.

Both casting agencies and modeling agencies play pivotal roles in their respective areas of the entertainment and fashion industries.
